Preston, Mississippi USA

Who are you and what do you do?
'I'm Rocky Higginbotham, a 22-year veteran of the newspaper industry who is currently the Director of Communications for East Mississippi Community College. EMCC is a junior college located on the opposite side of Kemper County in Scooba; and our school was made famous by the Netflix series Last Chance U.

As far as me, personally, I'm 47 years old and have lived in Preston or within a 1-hour drive of Preston my entire life.'

Why do you choose to live in Preston?
'I choose to live in Preston because I grew up here and my immediate family is still very close to here.'

What's your favourite place in Preston and why?
'My favourite place in Preston would have to be the Preston General Store, which dates back to the 1800s and has largely been owned by the same family for the majority of that time. From general merchandise to fishing gear and bait to hot food, this old country gas station offers most everything.'

What is Preston proud of?
'Let me tell you a little about Preston, MS. Although it's unincorporated, it does have its own post office and zip code. It has a country store that is in its third century; and a year or two ago, a Dollar General Store opened there (like much of rural America). Through the years, it has been home to a bank, a car wash and a medical clinic. It has its own volunteer fire department and is home to the Northwest Kemper Water Association offices.'

Tell us something about Preston that people won't know?
'Couple of unique aspects about Preston. The actual 'town' itself is so small that if it were not for trees and other obstacles in the way, one could literally stand at one road sign and see the other where it ends on the opposite end of 'town'. While it is physically located in Kemper County, the zip code covers such a broad rural area that residents with Preston addresses can actually live in four different counties: Kemper, Noxubee, Winston and Neshoba.'
